April 2010 at Future Hope School

The highlight of April was, of course, the mela until the Under 16s triumphed in the all India U 16 Rugby Tournament in Orissa

Salad Days

Last week the KG class went to town in the last lesson on Friday and finished their week by making cucumber salad, Southern Indian style. They prepared and cut the cucumber, mixed in the dahi curd and the mustard paste and then invited staff and other pupils to taste their efforts. Mr Carling brought his EAL class and they tucked in to this dish with relish. What will they be cooking for us next?

Jon Stock

Well known Daily Telegraph writer and spy novelist, Jon Stock, stopped in with his family as they returned from Sikkim and Darjeeling where  he has been researching his next novel in the series which started with “Dead Spy Running”.

Jon Stock, novelist and writer for Daily Telegraph speaks to Future hope students in Kolkata

On 23rd April Jon spoke to a group of classes from the middle and senior school about his trade and how he set about writing a novel. He said that a lot of the work was done on the train and therefore when there was a strike or delay rather than get angry and frustrated he enjoyed the extra time it gave him before work. He explained where he got his ideas from and whether it was the plot or the character that was the most important. Then Jon talked about the way that his book was being turned into a Hollywood movie. He answered questions from the audience and then asked for suggestions for the names he could give the next new character in his next book. Everybody really enjoyed the session and we learnt a lot. Jon told us that everybody has aat least one book in them and he encouraged everybody to try writing.

Earth Day

The Fast Track Class took centre stage on 22nd April this year as they presented an assembly which reminded us that we all have a part to play in caring for the earth, animal life and the planet’s resources. They sang a beautiful song with accompanying actions and the costumes that they wore made it really dramatic. Then Mrs Nundee read Shel Silverstein’s poem, the Giving Tree. She asked us to write about trees and the way that they gave so much to life on Earth. Then the group sang another song with the theme “We need to take care of our Earth.”   It was an excellent reminder to us all of the importance of Earth Day.
